National statistics bulletin on the seizures of drugs in England and Wales 2007-08

7 May 2009

Statement from the Policing and Crime Minister in response to the publication of the statistics.

Policing and Crime Minister Vernon Coaker said, 'I am encouraged to see the continued increase in drug seizures by police forces across the country and I want to congratulate them for their hard work.

'The police and their partner agencies have made more seizures of drugs than ever before, however overall drug use is at its lowest level since the British Crime Survey (new window) began, so we can see that targeted operations by the police to clamp down on drug use are working.

'Our aim is clear we want fewer people to start using drugs, and of those who do use drugs we are getting record number into treatment.

'I want to see these numbers continue to fall so that our streets and communities can be free from the crime and anti-social behaviour caused by drug misuse and drug dealing.'
